Antique Sad Iron w/ Handle #8 - Black Heavy Doorstop Vintage Retro Style Shabby Cottage Chic Home Decor

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is an antique cast iron Sad iron that is black and marked with its weight on the top. Why are these old irons called Sad irons?

These irons were called Sad irons because “Sad” is an Old English word for “solid”. The term “sad iron” is often used to distinguish the largest and heaviest of flat irons, usually 5 to 9 pounds, such as this iron that is marked for 8 pounds. There is a handle that extends up from the solid bottom that was heated on a fire to get it ready to press clothing.

Before the advent of the electric iron, ironing meant having to heat and re-heat a set of irons over a fire. This type of iron was used through the 1800s.

The iron is black and looks good for its age. It has rust and light wear - certainly commensurate with an item that is about 150 years old.

This antique sad iron would be a perfect doorstop or country farmhouse or shabby chic decor item.

This iron says “8” on the top which corresponds to its weight of 8 pounds.

This iron (or a door stop) is in nice antique condition and has a matte black finish.

Do we answer questions about the value or “worth” of items?

No, we are not comfortable providing pricing or answering questions about the value or worth of vintage or antique items. We believe they are worth what someone will pay for them.
