Antique James W Tufts Boston Silverplate Bride's Cake Basket - Footed Handled Ornate Holloware - Victorian Late 1800s - Shabby Chic

Sorry, this item has sold.

Antique Footed Handled Cake Basket that is made of silver plate with ornate raised designs of fruit, floral and other curled and swirled embellishments on the sides and center. This piece is from the late 1800s.

The center is an eye-catching raised display of pears, grapes, berries and pineapple in a round shape. On the outer rim and and on the outer portion of the base is an intricate raised pattern of flowers, swirls, oval shapes and other elements. The handle is a single piece of twisted silver plate and stays upright. It can move to the left or right about 1" or so.

This silverplate piece is circa late 1800s or early 1900s. Silver companies created these more affordable pieces in quadruple plate (silver plate) which was more affordable than silver. As this piece is, many were decorated with etchings for engravings of flowers, birds, leaves and vines and given as gifts to a bride for her wedding.

The hallmark on the piece is for the James W. Tufts Silver Company of Boston, Massachusetts. It was in business from 1875 to 1891 . (This hallmark of a star with a T inside it dates the antique cake basket to the late 1800s.)

Measures approx. 7" high to edge of the rim. Measures 0" with the handle extended upwards. Top has an 9" diameter. Base has a 4 1/2" diameter.

In nice antique condition with lots of patina all over with wear on the silver plate commensurate with age - a perfect shabby or cottage chic decor item!

I didn't polish this piece as some folks like patina. This has lots of patina. The handle moves a bit to the left and right but stays upright easily. The top of the basket’s decorative rim has an upturned side where there are no handles and is slightly downturned on the sides with the handle - see photos for detail.

This cake basket or bride's basket would certainly be beautiful for serving fruit, cake, or any other dessert. A paper lace doily can be placed on the top to add to the lovely display of whatever treat is served.

Hallmarked on the bottom JAMES W TUFTS BOSTON WARRANTED QUADRUPLEPLATE with the pattern number 2767.
