Pair Antique Art Nouveau Spelter Iffland Busts L'HIVER & L'ETE Franz Iffland C 1890 Pair Art Nouveau Statues Winter and Summer German Artist

$345.00

Two antique bronze cast metal Art Nouveau era busts: one of L'HIVER and one of L'ETE by the renowned German sculptor Franz Iffland (1862-1935). The word "L'HIVER" is embossed on the front torso of one bust and L'ETE embossed on the right front of the other. Both statues are signed "F. Iffland" on the back on the girl's torso. These two statues are circa 1880-1910. I believe these two antique statues are made of spelter - a zinc alloy of equal parts copper and zinc. It was commonly used for many early 20th-century Art Nouveau ornaments and Art Deco figures.

Franz Iffland was a well-known German sculptor and painter who created portrait busts and figurines. He participated in the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts in the late 1800s, and also had some of his works included in the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin in 1893.

These two "Seasonal Maidens" busts depict the themes of winter and summer. L'hiver means winter. Original gold toned bronze patina is in nice antique condition with some wear in various places. She is in overall good structural condition.

L'ete, which means summer, originally held a tennis racquet - only the base of the racquet remains as the other portion was broken off and is lost. Original gold toned bronze patina on this bust in good antique condition but Lete has suffered some damage due to a fall. Her left side is damaged and she is cracked about 1 - 2" up from the base with a crack that goes about half way around her. She still stands but rocks a bit- see photos #3 and #4 for a look from the back and inside of the crack area. This item has been priced accordingly and reflects her damage. When placed on a shelf, she is still quite lovely.

Still a rare find and nice set by a well renowned German Art Nouveau sculptor.

Measure approx. 12" high and 7" wide each.

L'hiver is in good antique condition with normal finish wear commensurable with antique age (these busts are approx. 100 plus years old). L'ete has structural damage as noted above.

No, we are not comfortable providing pricing or answering questions about the value or worth of vintage or antique items. We believe they are worth what someone will pay for them.
