Vintage makeup compact Manufactured by William Herbert Roystone. Roystone was an American cosmetics pioneer who was in business at the beginning of the 20th Century. He was very aware of the importance of eye catching branding and clever packaging design including his La May cosmetics brand which lasted about ten years before it eventually failed.

This compact has a mirror on the top half and a powder well on the bottom half. The well has an open center that is covered by the puff. It would be a great way to store your mineral makeup in your purse with a touch of romance and history!

This compact is one of Roystone's last vanity case designs. It was manufactured by the Pallas Manufacturing Co of New York City circa 1928.

The compact cover features two classic French figures, Pierrot – the love-sick clown - a classic icon from the Commedia Dell'Arte and his flirtatious wife Columbine. They are on the top of the powder compact with a background vertical design. The back or bottom has the background vertical design only.

Inside it is hallmarked L'Ame and under that cursive stamp is is written La-May inside parenthesis and the words PATENT MARCH 21-25.

Measures 2" in diameter.

The side edges are 1/4” thick and the center section is about 1/2” thick. It gets a bit thicker as you move to the center.

In very nice antique condition. Opens and closes nicely - locks tight. Has one used puff inside. Powder well is clean.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do we answer questions about the value or “worth” of items?

No, we are not comfortable providing pricing or answering questions about the value or worth of vintage or antique items. We believe they are worth what someone will pay for them. Therefore, there is no way to assign something a set monetary value - in our opinion. We suggest doing an online search to find similar items and take it from there.
