This portrait of a an early 18th century era woman holding a parasol over her shoulder hand painted on vellum is from the estate of a couple who were antique dealers in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.

The lovely lady painted in this small oval shaped portrait wears a blue dress with white frilly trim around the low cut neckline and sleeves. She clutches a wrapping of white translucent material that flows around her. Her hat has a wide brim and blue ribbons with a bow on it that ties under her chin. There is a cluster of pink roses in her hair under her bonnet. She has powdered hair, as was the custom at the time.

This portrait in the brass colored frame still has a handwritten paper price tag attached with string on it from an antique store in Ohio identifying it as "English painting of 18th century lady on vellum" on one side and "portrait miniature" and the item's price at that shop listed at $750 on the other side.

The lady is framed in an oval brass colored frame with a glass cover on top of the vellum painting. There is a loop on the top for hanging. On the back of the brass colored frame is a silver foil sticker from the Antique Aronof Galleries in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Measures 4" wide x 5" long (not including the hanging loop).

In nice antique condition with some wear on the oval frame. There is a chip in the glass on the upper left side of the oval - see last photo for detail.


NOTE:
Like the word veal, vellum is derived from the Latin vitulus (calf). As such, vellum is made from the skin of a calf, but at times the skin of a lamb or goat could have been used. Miniature paintings like this one were made on treated skins like kidskin, lambskin, calfskin because this type of skin was durable and held the paint to the surface. Portrait miniatures were popular among 16th-century through to the 18th-century, remaining highly popular until the development of daguerreotypes and photography in the mid-19th century.

Shipping from United States

We ship within 1-2 days of payment confirmation via the good old USPS. On occasion we do ship some items via FedEx. Shipping prices are calcuated by the USPS and are by size/weight and distance - we are located in New York State. Please convo us with your zip code if you have a question about shipping.

Shipping large or oversized items to certain addresses (such as the DPO or APO) may not always be possible due to price. Please convo us before making your purchase if you would like your item to be shipped to a US Military base. It may require an additional charge.

Items over $25 may be shipped with Signature Confirmation in order to ensure that you receive your item.

Customs Fees or Duties may be applicable in your country - we are not privy to or responsible for any Duties or Fees associated with delivery of your item.

**We do not ship glass or delicate china/porcelain or Chalkware items via USPS Parcel Ground Select. The USPS notes this about Parcel Ground Select, "combined with a longer transit time, the shipment will be bounced, jolted, handled and thrown around more than shipments that are sent through any of the air services offered by the USPS." Due to this information, we do NOT ship glass items via this method.

Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:

  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)

Returns and exchange details

If your item arrives broken, we will refund your total purchase upon upon receipt of a few photos of the damaged item and the packaging within three (3) days of delivery.

When returning undamaged items, the buyer pays shipping both ways for item returns.

If you would like a partial refund if a portion of your order is damaged, send a good photo of the damaged item and we can work out a resolution that is satisfactory for both of us.

If you are unhappy with any purchase, you may return your item within fourteen (14) days at your expense for a refund of the purchase price (not including shipping either way - we will not refund the shipping portion of the cost paid when originally purchased). We strive to describe our items in detail and take good descriptive photos as well so that our buyers know what they are purchasing.

Additional

We do our research on our items as much as we can and strive to be accurate when describing and photographing our items. We also pack our items with great care, but we understand that sometimes items don't "travel well".

Please keep in mind that vintage, retro or antique items are not like new, nor are they perfect but they tell a story of the past and have lots of charm. This means they have had a previous owner and may show wear. We try to describe this in each listing. Please use our photos to make your decisions, ask us questions and read our policies prior to making your purchase.

We ship all of our items. For safety and economic reasons we do not offer in-person delivery.

Regarding "reserving" items: We do not put any items on reserve for any period of time.
