Vintage 1960s Lacquer Japanese Music Jewelry Box - Boat Shape Retro Jewelry Box w/ Abalone Inlay 1970s Bedroom Storage Home Decor

Lacquered Japanese Jewelry Box in the shape of a boat. The boat is colorfully decorated with landscape scenes of mountains, building, trees, bridge, on the front and a smaller, less detailed landscape on the back side. The bottom edge has a blue water design to make it look like waves. The top has some ablane inlay on both side edges of the roof. the smaller front and back sections also have a bit of painting of trees and a grass. There is gold striping on the roof, the front and all of the sides, and there are some decorative hinges on the front side as well on either side of the bottom drawer.

When the musical part of this jewelry box it is wound, it plays a melody - yes, the retro music box in this jewelry storage box still works. The music box winds from the brass knob in the back of this retro piece of bedroom decor. I do not know what the tune that plays is.

In addition to this mid century jewelry box 's painted areas and gold trim, there is also abalone inlay along the top edges. The original ballerina that used to stand on a post is still inside the music box. The ballerina, who wears a red polka dot skirt and gold top, would twirl around when the central (and largest compartment) top lid is opened, but she has fallen off her post - see photos.

There are three storage areas in this unique vintage jewelry box. This circa 1960s black, blue, green, turquoise, gold, white and red lacquered jewelry box has a large storage area in the center of the boat shape. When the lid opens you can see the post for the ballerina. The top of the lid is mirrored on all sides and in the front. Underneath this compartment is a drawer storage area. This drawer has a horizontal handle. The third area is the triangular area that is the front of the boat. There is a brass knob at the top that you lift to open this area. It has hinges on the back.

All inside compartments have a red faux velvet lining. The bottom has a gold painted hallmark and says JAPAN.

There are some chips on the exterior of this vintage jewelry/music box consistent with the vintage age of this item (see photos). There was originally some decorative stencil designs on the top or roof of the boat and on the top of the triangular compartment that have faded and are barely visible. The ballerina has broken off of the post in the center of the large mirrored section.

It measures approx. 12" x 5 1/2" and 5 1/2" tall.
