Vintage or Antique Men's Accessory - Loop Button Hook, Chain w/ Hermes Medal - Mystery Piece - Retro Medal of Hermes on Button Loop
A very unique piece that features a hanging medal of the Greek god Hermès and a twisted loop that would be used to hook it on a button. The medal hangs from a piece of chain. This silver tone metal piece is a mystery to me - I am unable to find anything like it or determine exactly what it was called. It was in a lot of Victorian items that I purchased at an auction. (If anyone knows what this is, please convo me - I am the curious kind!) My best guess is that this is a type of fob worn on a gentleman's waistcoat.
This antique or vintage item was quite dark/tarnished when I found it but it polished up nicely. The top loop and chain are non-magnetic but the hanging medal of Hermes is magnetic (or NOT sterling silver).
NOTE: Hermes was one of the 12 Olympian Gods and was god of trade, thieves, travelers, sports, athletes, and border crossings, guide to the Underworld. He was the son of ZEUS and Maia. Hermes is also the patron of orators and wit, literature and poets, athletics and sports, invention and trade. Hermes is often depicted as a trickster - he would trick the other gods for the good of humankind or his own personal amusement.
Measures 4 3/4” long. The hanging medal of Hermès is about the size of a dime.
In nice antique condition with light patina.
